The path to GOGREENSURFBOARDS.COM: Clone Surfboards and Surfchairs

Jim Mizell, the creator of Clone® Surfboards, started surfing in 1959. He has been making his own surfboards since 1970. Jim lived in Hawaii for ten years where he surfed some of the best and biggest waves in the world and learned the art of board shaping from TRUE craftsmen. Back on the mainland, he shaped thousands of conventional boards. But surfboards are fragile and their materials can be toxic. Boards that last longer mean less waste and a lower environmental impact.

Jim at HBMizell went to work developing a well-shaped surfboard that would be stronger than any board on the water. My company Clone has integrated gogreensurfboards.com to educate surfers and show my commitment to significantly reduce CFC's in our boards and related products. The foam I use is OSHA approved and due to the Clone manufacturing process, I have eliminated shaping and sanding as well as work with chemists regularly to further reduce and eventually eliminate all CFCs from my manufacturing process.

Foam blank manufacturers in the US are no longer in business because higher standards have been put in place by the government. The same blank banned in the US is allowed to be imported from oversees. Conventional surfboards today are made with a cyanide gas called Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) which is a polyurethane that can be a major health factor. Clone's system has completely eliminated the hand shaping process, which results in NO pollutants in the air or inhalation by the user.

CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon) studies undertaken by various scientists revealed that Man–made CFC emissions to date have accounted for roughly 80% of the total ozone depletion. They have a lifetime of about 20–100 years and can therefore continue to destroy ozone for a long period. One CFC molecule can result in the loss of 100,000 ozone molecules. CFC's released accumulate in the stratosphere, where they had a deleterious effect on the ozone layer. Stratospheric ozone shields living organisms on Earth from the harmful effects of the Sun's ultraviolet radiation; even a relatively small decrease in the ozone concentration can result in an increased incidence of skin cancer in humans, eye cataract, kill planktons, damage genetic and other marine organisms.

I have always been a conservationist. As a surfer, how could you not be? I was a Special Ops combat Engineer in Vietnam where I learned to make something from nothing on a daily basis. I prayed everyday I would make it home safely and when I did, I used my skills to symbolize my creativity, actualize my imagination, passion for craftsmanship and love for surfing to develop a new age surfboard.

Most surfers are not aware of the pollutants, and I believe in protecting our planet for myself, my family and generations to come. The system I have created is unlike anything available today. We buy and use green materials made in America, which cut costs, emissions and pollutants.

When you ride a green surfboard on the perfect wave be proud you have done your part to preserve our planet. When you sit in a green surfchair, be proud you own an American Made piece of art that was designed to bring a way of life into your home.
